Lights in the North (But Not the Northern Lights)

A winter’s night at Porjus station house

I was hoping to be able to feature some photos of the northern lights this week, but unfortunately I didn’t get any! The weather didn’t want to play nice when I was in Porjus, Sweden, and this was the least cloudy night we had (it clouded right back up again about 30 minutes after I got this shot).

Even though I didn’t get that shot (or more importantly, the experience) that I wanted, there were plenty of others to be had. For instance, I experienced the simple joy of being outside when it seemed like the rest of the world had packed up and gone home (and at points I didn’t blame them, since this photo was shot when it was -16C!). It was absolute silence. Sometimes wind whistled through the trees, occasionally a car would pass, and often I just needed to move my feet to warm them up (thus crunching snow underfoot), but otherwise, it was complete and utter silence. I loved it.

This picture is of the old Porjus station house, which is now home to the Patricia Cowern and her Arctic Colour gallery. I cannot say enough good things about my stay at Arctic Colour; Patricia was beyond helpful with absolutely everything. I loved the little town of Porjus too, and I hope I get another chance to visit so I can explore more of the area...and of course, so I can have another chance at seeing the northern lights!

Here are a few other winter’s night photos from Porjus:
